Fake-Hiding of Resources or Activities in Moodle 1.9x

An instructor asked me if it’s possible to have hidden resources or activities in Moodle 1.9x, and yet still link to them directly. It is (for the most part), though you don’t actually “hide” the resource or activity–you just don’t let it be seen.

The technique is pretty straight forward:

  1. In Settings add another week/topic (so if you had 16 weeks, set it 17)
  2. Turn editing on, then in that new week/topic, add resources and activities that you want to be “hidden”.
  3. Right-click on each resource/activity link, copy and paste the URL into a text doc for safe keeping.
  4. In Settings remove the extra week/topic (so you’re back down to 16)

All URLs to the resources and activities in the unseen Week/Topic will still work, so create hyperlinks where ever you like.

However, they’ll also be visible if you have the Activities block in the course, or if students back navigate to the Activities section via the breadcrumb line.

If you need to change the activity or resource, you can simply navigate to it, or you can re-add that unseen Week/Topic via Settings

it’s a great trick. Mary Cooch made a video that highlights the process as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtHPUh_BaxM

    Jared,

Is there a way to disable the resources/activity from the breadcrumbs?

    Thanks.
